iPhone 5C pre orders went live last night and it seems likely that there is a sheen of sweat popping up on the brow of Tim Cook. While Apple is used to seeing its new products approach sell out status at a very fast rate, the low budget version of the company’s flagship phone isn’t flying off the shelves.

BGR is reporting that despite the midnight start to pre orders, a sellout still isn’t in sight. That’s good news for people who wanted a little more time to decide whether or not they actually want to shell out the money for a new phone. That is bad news for a company that already saw some pretty significant hits on the stock market.

Excitement over the new models was very much muted, probably because there just aren’t a ton of new features with the iPhone 5C and 5S. People who already own an Apple handset might not be as excited about upgrading, especially when they know another phone is likely coming down the pike next year.

The computing giant is wanting to drive up demand for the new phones with a trade in program that retailers like Walmart and Amazon are jumping on as well. It appears that demand hasn’t materialized just yet. Part of the problem is almost certainly that the phone just isn’t cheap enough.

After spending the summer hearing rumors of an uber cheap new handset, Apple fanboys were a little less than overwhelmed with a phone that offers little more than what they have and carries just a slightly smaller price tag. While Apple is not seeing any sellouts just yet, it does appear that Sprint is starting to see demand pick up just a little bit this morning.

If sales of this cheaper model really are as unimpressive as they are looking out of the gate, worries over sales for the iPhone 5S are only go to increase as that launch dates nears.
